Shorthanded Cardinals earn a draw at Channel Islands

Having to play with a shuffled lineup due to injuries, Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team got off to a rocky start in its final non-league game, giving up a goal in the first minute at Channel Islands on Friday.

But the Cardinals settled down, responded with the tying goal in the 14th minute and played organized the rest of the way to earn a 1-1 draw.

“We didn’t have our goalkeeper and put in a makeshift keeper and switched people around,” Bishop coach Brent Gonsalves said. “We weren’t organized in the first minute. Once we scored we locked in and played very organized, very compact.”

Gonsalves admitted the game plan was to play more defensively, and he was pleased with the discipline.

“We were not as offensive as we’ve been. We were a little cautious,” he said.

Gabby Koepenick scored the goal for the Cardinals (7-2-2). She dribbled around the Channel Islands goalkeeper and shot into the open net.

Gonsalves said his team should be a full strength for Tuesday’s Frontier League opener at Carpinteria.
