California ski resorts finally get some snow

California’s Sierra Nevada ski resorts finally received a substantial amount of natural snowfall this last weekend. Mammoth Mountain’s website reported 57 inches of snow since Friday, which has allowed the resort to open all of its 28 lifts for the first time in 2012.

Super Thursday for Chargers, Dons, Royals

Stomachs will be churning all day Thursday for student-athletes at Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara and San Marcos as they nervously wait for the start of their important Channel League competitions.

The DP wrestlers travel to arch-rival Ventura to battle for the league team championship. Last year’s dual meet came down to the final match and Ventura prevailed.

You can be sure DP’s defending league individual champions Chad Lampe and Nico Sorenson will have their teammates fired up for this epic showdown at Tuttle Gym.

In the last CIF rankings, Ventura is No. 2 and DP 10th in Division 4.

The Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara girls water polo teams clash in their first league meeting on Thursday at 3:15 p.m., at DP’s Elings Aquatics Center. The Chargers have had the upper hand in the rivalry the last few years, but the Dons have come close to winning. Both of last year’s league clashes were decided by one goal.

Also at DP on Thursday, the Chargers host San Marcos in a key Channel League boys soccer match at 5 p.m. The game was rescheduled from Tuesday because of the rain. DP needs a win to stay in the playoff hunt, while San Marcos is trying to stay on the heels of league-leading Santa Barbara.

Foresters host “Hot Stove” dinner on Friday

The Santa Barbara Foresters will induct three new members into their Hall of Fame on Friday at a fundraising dinner that will benefit UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The dinner and reception is Friday night at Earl Warren Showgrounds. Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is the keynote speaker. CLICK HERE for more info on the event.

San Marcos vs. Santa Barbara boys basketball: Part II

In their first meeting this season, the boys basketball teams from San Marcos and Santa Barbara High needed two overtimes to decide the outcome. The Dons eventually came away with the 73-71 victory at the SBCC Sports Pavilion.

This week’s game, the second of three clashes this season, is Wednesday night at Santa Barbara High. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Don’t get there late if you want a seat.
