Overtime tilts in Chargers’ favor

After trailing for most of Saturday’s game with Pacifica, Dos Pueblos’ girls basketball team forced overtime and recorded a 64-60 non-league win over Pacifica in the extra period.

The Tritons had held the lead since the first quarter but Jessica Escalante and the Chargers tied the game at 55-55 to force OT on a coast-to-coast play by the senior guard in the final seconds of regulation.

“We were always trailing, but we always kept it close,” explained Dos Pueblos head coach Jelani Hicks. “Once we got into overtime, Jasmine Mata had two buckets that put us up and we never trailed after that.”

Pacifica was runner-up in the Green Division at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions in December.

“It was it a good win for us,” Hicks said.

Escalante’s 17 points led the Chargers, which benefited from having four players in double figures. Jasmine Mata collected 16 points, Talitha Draper 12 and Chiara DiMarco had 10. Kristen Gowdy added seven points and eight rebounds.

The Chargers, 16-5 overall and 1-0 in Channel League play, return next week with league games against Ventura on Tuesday and Santa Barbara on Thursday.
