Elder’s 27 points pace Laguna Blanca past Cate

Logan Elder took over the scoring load for Laguna Blanca, pouring in 27 points to lead the Owls to a 59-45 Condor League boys basketball win at Cate on Wednesday.

Elder knocked down four 3-pointers on the night, two of them coming in a big third quarter for the Owls. They outscored the Rams 18-10 to break the game open.

Andrew Vignolo added 14 points for Laguna Blanca (6-4, 3-1), which lost to Cate in their first meeting in Hope Ranch.

“We led wire to wire with pressure defense and up tempo play,” Laguna coach Sal Rodriguez said. “We got strong play off the bench from Stephen McCaffery.”

Austin Gallegos scored 15 points and Kyle Mayfield added 11 points for the Rams (6-4, 4-2).

“We came out flat and struggled putting the ball in the bucket,” Cate coach Bryan Rodriguez said. “On defense, we were sloppy; we were all over the place.”

The Rams also had trouble holding on to the basketball. They committed 21 turnovers.

“It was just sloppy play. Our guys didn’t show up,” Rodriguez said.
