Dimarco’s 27 carries DP past Santa Barbara

Chiara Dimarco of Dos Pueblos drives around a Santa Barbara defender. She scord 27 points.

Dos Pueblos guard Chiara Dimarco torched Santa Barbara for 27 points in a Channel League girls basketball showdown, leading the Chargers to a 62-53 win at Sovine Gym.

“In the first half, Chiara just put us on her back,” DP coach Jelani Hicks said.

Dimarco also had four assists and six rebounds. Kristen Gowdy and Talitha Draper played well on the low blocks and established an inside presence for Dos Pueblos. Gowdy had 17 points and nine rebounds while Draper finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

For the Dons, Ivette Gil had 17 points and Desirea Coleman put up 13. Gil was forced to find her points while being the center of attention for the Dos Pueblos defense.

“We made it tough for their best player, Ivette Gil,” Hicks said.

The Chargers were able to stick to fundamentals and grind out an important Channel League victory.

“What it really came down to was getting stops and getting rebounds,” Hicks said to sum up the game.

Santa Barbara will continue its season on Saturday at the Buena Invitational, and return to league play at home against Ventura on Thursday.

Dos Pueblos improved to 2-1 in the Channel League and 16-6 overall and will play next at Buena on Thursday.
