In a fiercely contested match, the Cate School girls soccer team was able to earn a narrow 3-2 victory over Laguna Blanca at home.
Cate started extremely fast and scored in the second and eight minutes to take a 2-0 lead.
The ball stayed in the midfield and the game was a stalemate for the next 55 minutes, but Laguna Blanca came roaring back in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Bryn Jewett placed a through ball onto Tiana Bonn’s foot, and Bonn kept the ball low and found the back of the net to cut Cate’s lead in half.
Just five minutes later, Elise Scheuermann put the ball into the middle of the field for McKenzie Scarborough who won the ball and beat the Cate goalkeeper for the equalizer.
With all the momentum on their side, the Cardinals looked poised to get another goal in the final ten minutes of the game.
The crafty Rams were able to find space by catching Laguna Blanca on a counter attack, and capitalized on the late opportunity to score the game-winning goal with just five minutes left in the game.
The Cardinals continued their relentless attack, and game close to another goal on multiple shots in the final minutes, but could not tie the game.
“A lot of heart, character, and determination was shown by both teams and it saw a very exciting ending,” Laguna Blanca head coach Kevin Shertzer said.
Cate will travel to play Tacher on Wednesday.
Laguna Blanca will have the next week off and will continue its season on January 25 at home against Thacher.
