Cardinals earn a point with second-half comeback

The Bishop Diego boys soccer team fell behind St. Bonaventure 2-0 in the first half, but stormed back to tie the game late and earn a 2-2 draw in Ventura.

“In the first half we had a couple of mistakes in the back and we came out a little bit slow,” head coach Ivan Becerra said. “They countered and that’s what killed us.”

The Cardinals were held scoreless for 60 minutes, but Matthew Hammond finally broke through the St. Bonaventure defense to cut the deficit in half. Hammond fought for a corner kick that was not cleared and was able to tap the ball past the goalkeeper.

Bishop Diego scrambled for an equalizer, and Justin Brosnan finally pulled his team level in the 77th minute when he fired a shot from distance into the back of the net.

“In the second half we kept the ball more and found our players up top,” Becerra said.

With the score tied at 2-2, the teams played two overtime periods. Neither team was able to score and the game ended in a tie.

Bishop Diego (2-3 Tri-Valley League) will continue its season on Tuesday at home against Grace Brethren.
