It was a tough day for San Marcos’ girls water team on the final day of the Villa Park Tournament, as the Royals dropped two games by a total of 3 goals on Saturday.
Bonita topped the Royals 13-12 in a sudden-death overtime game in the morning, followed by a 10-8 setback to Rosary in the later game.
San Marcos dealt with foul trouble throughout the day, having to play the first game’s overtime without two starters who had fouled out.
The same thing happened in the second match, as foul trouble limited the Royals’ ability to play their game in the second half against Rosary. San Marcos led 7-3 at halftime but lost the way in the second half.
“We just, honestly, it was one of the most frustrating losses I’ve been a part of in awhile,” said Royals head coach Brian Roth.
San Marcos finished the tournament with a 2-3 record and finished 12th out of 32 teams.
“It’s our best finish ever in this tournament, that’s the positive,” Roth said.
Jeanna Phreaner stopped 20 shots and collected a pair of steals in the two games. Halie Johnson posted eight goals on Saturday to finish with 21 for the tournament. Hannah Koper added seven goals and totaled 20 in five tournament games.
San Marcos now returns to Santa Barbara after three days in Orange County and the Royals begin Channel League play on Tuesday against Dos Pueblos.
The Royals do get another chance at Bonita in a non-tournament game next Saturday.
