Shull hits five threes, but Bishop Diego falls one point short

Greer Shull drained five three-pointers on her way to a 26-point performance, but Hueneme was able to edge out Bishop Diego 50-49 at the Fillmore Tournament.

The Cardinals started slow and went down 10-2, but Greer’s performance, which included seven rebounds, as well as 12 points from Josie McCoy, allowed them to climb back into the game.

Hueneme opened up a six-point lead midway through the first quarter, but Bishop Diego refused to quit and started to tighten up on defense.

The Cardinals only allowed six points in the fourth quarter and were able to get back within striking distance of their opponents.

Bishop Diego had three quality looks in the last 40 seconds of the game, including a shot off of a perfectly executed out-of-bounds play with one second remaining that was only kept out by a stroke of bad luck.

“We just didnt get one break in the 4th quarter,” head coach Jeff Burich said. “If something would have gone our way, we would have won.”

The Cardinals (2-1) will play Fillmore on Saturday for third place in the tournament.
