Royals need big fourth quarter to advance

Kevin Hempy had a good outing for San Marcos’ boys basketball team on his birthday, and the Royals celebrated with a 45-33 victory over Templeton on the second day of the Coast Union Tournament.

Hempy turned 17 and almost matched his age with his combined scoring and rebounding totals. Instead, he did one better with 10 points and eight rebounds. Thayer White added 11 points for San Marcos.

The Royals had command in the first half and entered the halftime break up 23-10. But Templeton came back in the third and only trailed by two entering the fourth quarter.

A 19-9 fourth quarter was needed to put the tournament’s defending champion Royals on track to advance into Saturday’s semifinals against Stockdale.
