Pirates fend off short-handed Cardinals

Bishop Diego had its season opener in boys basketball on Monday but played with only six players with several regulars not yet ready from playing in a football CIF playoff game on Friday night.

Santa Ynez bested Bishop Diego 43-38 despite 15 points from Cardinals senior Elias Munoz.

The Cardinals needed a pair of JV players to make the trip and fill out their lineup. Sophomore Grant Sexton collected 12 points on four 3-pointers and Leo Schneider added seven points.

Santa Ynez trailed at halftime but the third quarter shifted the balance in the Pirates’ favor. The Cardinals could only post five points in the frame and entered the final period down 33-28.

Bishop Diego (0-1) plays again on Tuesday in the opener of the Oak Park Tournament. The Cardinals face a stiff matchup in Ventura on Tuesday before meeting tournament host Oak Park on Wednesday. Cardinals head coach Dean Prophet expects the football guys to start lacing up this week.
