Morrison’s last-second trey gives Royals a TOC victory

Hope Morrison hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift San Marcos to a 40-39 win over Nipomo in the Green Division 15th-place game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday at Maurey Halleck  Gym.

It was only the second win of the season for the young Royals.

“It was good for your girls, just having that confidence,” first-year coach Devin Uyesaka said. “It’s a week and a half till league starts, so it’s nice to have that win.”

Morrison, a sophomore guard, sank four 3-pointers in the game en route to a team-high 14 points. Emily Dietz added seven points for the Royals.

“She was lighting it up,” Uyesaka said of Morrison.

On the game winning shot, “One of our girls saved the ball from going out of bounds and it ended up in Hope’s hands, and she just lit it up,” said Uyesaka.

San Marcos battled back from a 16-9 deficit in the first quarter and four points down with three minutes to go in the game.
