IN-GAME UPDATES: San Marcos at Dos Pueblos boys basketball

GAME PREVIEW:  San Marcos and Dos Pueblos open up the boys basketball season on Wednesday in Sovine Gym. The Royals (7-2) are debuting black jerseys for the first time in school history.  The Chargers (2-3) are playing their first game in a week after a less-busy preseason than the Royals.

GAME OVER: San Marcos holds on for a 41-33 victory. The Royals were led in scoring by Cade Ridenour with 16 and Thayer White with 10. Dos Pueblos’ Cruz Merterns collected 12 points and Mansai Conner tallied 11.

3:11 REMAINING IN GAME – Dos Pueblos has continued its push in the scond half, bringing themselves to 33-28 on a Cruz Mertens 3-pointer. But another basket from Cade Ridenour, giving him 12 points in game, puts San Marcos back up by seven.

START OF FOURTH QUARTER – Dos Pueblos turns in a much better third quarter, at one point pulling to within six of the Royals at 28-22. San Marcos takes a 29-22 lead into the final quarter.

6:05 LEFT IN THIRD QUARTER – Dos Pueblos comes out after struggling on the offensive end in the first half and Mansai Conner drills a jumper on the Chargers’ first possession. A San Marcos layup makes it 24-9.

HALFTIME – San Marcos heads to the locker room with a 22-7 lead. Cade Ridenour leads all scorers with seven points coming off the bench.  Kevin Hempy and Thayer White both have five points for San Marcos. The Chargers have struggled mightily on offense and have managed to score only two field goals in the first two quarters.

3:10 – Thayer White puts in a layup for a 13-point San Marcos lead, the Royals biggest of the first half. White’s layup causes Chargers head coach Joe Zamora to call a timeout.

3:45 REMAINING IN FIRST HALF – Bryce Ridenour gets a layup on a second chance opportunity to give the Royals a 14-3 lead. Dos Pueblos is mired in a scoring slump until Mansai Conner converts a pair of free throws to make it 14-5.

6:26 LEFT IN SECOND QUARTER – Both teams turn the ball over on their first possession but then Cade Ridenour gives the Royals a 12-3 lead by nailing a 3-pointer as the shot clock was about to expire.

END OF FIRST QUARTER – Score remains 9-3, Dos Pueblos’ only bucket being a 3-pointer from Cruz Mertens. Kevin Hempy leads all scorers with five points. The Royals hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter – one by Hempy and another by Chad Ridenour.

1:23 – The Royals have built a 9-3 lead but have been whistled for traveling calls on their last two possessions. Dos Pueblos is stuck on 3, with Mertens’ bucket still its only score.

3:30 LEFT IN FIRST QUARTER – San Marcos has taken a 6-3 lead. Kevin Hempy scored the first five points for the Royals, but Cruz Mertens’ 3-pointer for the Chargers gets DP on the scoreboard.

TIPOFF – San Marcos fanbase has shown up in force. Following the lead of their players, the Royals faithful are mostly wearing black.
