Peter Gamboa’s goal started Santa Barbara High’s boys soccer team with a 1-0 victory on Thursday at the Buena Tournament, but the Dons were stopped in their second game by Thousand Oaks.
The loss means the Buena Tournament will see a champion other than the Dons for the first time since 2008. Santa Barbara beat Dos Pueblos last year to win its second consecutive title.
Santa Barbara fell behind two goals in the first half and could not fully recover, losing 2-1.
“In the second half we played really well. We played with a lot of pride,” said Dons head coach Todd Heil.
T.J. Fairchild scored his first goal of the season in the second half.
Gamboa’s goal in the first game came after Tanner Wolf served a free kick into the penalty area. After some bounces, Gamboa knocked in the goal with his head.
The Dons play Rio Mesa on Friday morning for a chance to play for fifth place.
