Dos Pueblos’ incredible 68-match winning streak started back in February of 2009 after a loss to Corona del Mar. The streak finally ended on Friday as the Chargers fell to the last team that beat them, as the Sea Queens snapped the run with a 10-8 decision.
It had been so long since Dos Pueblos’ girls water polo team lost a game that only the seniors that had played on varsity as freshman knew the feeling. In fact, Dos Pueblos is 83-2 in its last 85 games with both losses coming to CDM.
“It was a good game pretty much the whole way through; we just had one bad quarter and they stung us,” said Chargers head coach Chris Parrish, who experienced his first loss with the team in his second year as head coach.
Dos Pueblos outscored CDM in the second half but had struggled in the second quarter to let the Sea Queens gain a 7-4 advantage at halftime. Corona del Mar scored five times in the second quarter to Dos Pueblos’ two.
Jamie Neushul tallied five goals for the Chargers and Ari St. Oegger found the net twice. Shannon Cleary also scored for Dos Pueblos. Parrish singled out Kodi Hill and Laurel Kistler for their defensive efforts.
The Chargers (1-1) face another tough matchup on Saturday as they meet Foothill, the No. 2 team in CIF Southern Section. Corona del Mar is No. 1 and DP is No. 4 in the CIF polls.
