Warriors move past Savanna into quarters

Carpinteria’s girls tennis team kept its season alive on Monday, advancing to the quarterfinals in CIF Division V after a 12-6 victory over visiting Savanna.

It’s the second playoff win for the Warriors, who move on to play again on Tuesday against top-seeded Aquinas. Monday’s second-round match had been postponed on Saturday because of wet weather.

The Warriors benefited greatly from sweeps at three positions. In singles, Kelsie Bryant and Kassandra Ni claimed six points for Carpinteria, and the doubles team of Erin Saito and Lesly Zapata swept their three sets.

“All of our girls played with a great sense of pride,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “They are competing well, even in the matches we are not winning.”

Carpinteria’s No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Shanya Norman and Cat Maldonado, and Katherine
Delk and Natalie Saito, each won a set as did No. 2 singles player Tess Pitzer.

Tuesday’s match will be between the No. 1 seed and No. 9 seed in the division with a berth to the semifinals on the line.
