Peterson, Canitez go for 20-plus in Warriors win

Lisa Peterson scored 26 points and Tugce Canitez added another 20 as Westmont Women’s Basketball (4-0) recorded a 65-50 win against Cal State San Marcos (1-4) on Monday night. Peterson made 10 of 14 attempts from the floor and six of seven from the free throw line.

“Our inside game was dominate again tonight,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “Lisa and Tugce played great tonight. Lauren Rock and Larissa Hensley came off the bench and played very good defense for us.”

Canitez pulled down 13 rebounds to record her second double-double of the year. She also collected five assists and snatched two steals. Earlier today, Canitez was named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Female Athlete of the Week after scoring 33 points and tallying nine rebounds in an exhibition game against

Two minutes into the game, Erin Beadle (6 points) scored the first points of the game with a bomb from beyond the arc and the Warriors led the rest of the way. By halftime, the Warriors held a 38-24 lead. The Cougars did not get closer than 10 points in the second half.

“San Marcos is a very scrappy team and there wasn’t a minute of the game we could relax and feel comfortable with the lead,” said Moore. “It forced us to have to be on top of our game.”

The Warriors out-rebounded the Cougars 40-32 and pulled down nearly half of their rebounds (19) from the offensive glass. That led to a 17 second-chance points for Westmont compared to just four for San Marcos.

The Warriors scored 25 points off of 22 Cougar turnovers, aided by nine Warrior steals. Westmont committed 12 turnovers that resulted in just four Cougar points.

On Saturday, the Warriors will host #17 Lubbock Christian (Texas) in a 5:30 p.m. game at Murchison Gymnasium.
