Owls stunned in playoff opener

Laguna Blanca’s girls volleyball couldn’t shake St. Paul in the second round of the Division 4-AA CIF playoffs on Thursday, falling in five sets 18-25, 25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Amanda Harvey and Makenzie Scarborough reached double-digit kills for the Owls, who finish their season with an 8-4 record and a Condor League title. Harvey collected 15 and Scarborough 12.

Harvey also had 11 digs, 49 assists and four aces to lead the Owls.

Laguna held leads of 5-3 and 6-4 in the fifth game but were caught at 7-7. The last tie came at 9-9, after which the Owls would not lead again. Hitting and passing errors doomed the Owls as St. Paul tallied its final six points on Laguna miscues to close out the match.

St. Paul advances to play either Sage Hill or Desert Hot Springs.
