Mexico, Castro spark SBCC past Ventura

Mackenzie Mexico turned in a sparkling performance in her debut at libero Wednesday night and middle hitter Bianca Castro had 13 kills with no errors as No. 22 SBCC posted a 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 sweep in a WSC North women’s volleyball match at Ventura.

It was the eighth win in nine matches for the second-place Vaqueros (10-9, 7-1).

Mexico, a freshman from Santa Ynez High, led the team with 15 digs. Emily Banas had eight kills while Heidi Van Den Oever and Rachel Stehly contributed four apiece. Mariah Mathews had 30 assists.

“Mackenzie was outstanding with her passing and defense,” said assistant coach Armen Zakarian. “That helped set up our middle attack. Our serve-receive was great and we did a good job of siding out.”

SBCC plays host to Cuesta on Friday at 7 p.m.
