Warriors lack bite in loss to Concordia

It was three and out for Westmont Volleyball as they took on #3 Concordia in Irvine on Saturday night. The Warriors struggled with their offense, posting just a .076 attack percentage against the Eagles. No Warrior had more than four kills. Set scores were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23.

“Concordia is a really good team and they played like it,” said Westmont head coach Patti Cook. “We were having trouble digging and were struggling in transition.”

Westmont led for most of the third set and held a 14-9 advantage. However, Concordia rallied, scoring the next six points to take a 15-14 lead. Westmont stayed close to the Eagles the rest of the set but never led again.

“Stacey Braceros said to me, ‘Even though it wasn’t one of our best games, I think we made some leaps with our mental game’,” said Cook. “The players did not lose focus or their drive to win.”

Another bright spot for the Warriors was the play of Heidi Thompson.

“Heidi did a good job for us off the bench,” said Cook. “I put her in the back row and then kept her in at right side hitter. She did not have much practice in that position but she came in gave us a little spark on the right side.”

With the loss, Westmont fell to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Concordia improved to 20-1 overall and 8-0 in the GSAC standings.

On Tuesday evening, the Warriors welcome the eighth-ranked Cougars of Azusa Pacific to Murchison Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for seven o’clock.
