Despite the heat at the Delong Invitational in Modesto, the San Marcos boys water polo team had ice-water in its veins, winning both of its first two games of the tournament by one-goal margins.
In the first match, the Royals defeated Ponderosa 6-5 and were helped tremendously by goalie Parker Woodward’s 16 saves, a season high for him.
“As well, I thought our defense did a good job of forcing poor shot selections from the other team and funneling the ball towards Parker,” head coach Jeff Ashton said.
Shane Hauschild had four goals in the match, while Kevyan Golizadeh and Spencer Kemp each had one.
In the second game of the day, the Royals defeated Pitman 9-8. Hauschild, Golizadeh, and Kemp again accounted for all of the San Marcos goals. Golizadeh led with four, followed by Hauschild with three and Kemp with two.
San Marcos improved to 14-9 on the season and continues play in the tournament tomorrow.
