San Marcos “on cloud nine” after first league victory in three years

The San Marcos girls volleyball team swept Buena on the road for its first Channel League victory in three years.

The scores for the sets were 25-14, 29-27, and 25-18.

“It was a huge night for us as a program as well as a team,” head coach Erica Downing said.

Kristen Berlo continued her excellent season with a fantastic performance highlighted by 11 kills, 12 blocks, a .440 hitting average, and no hitting errors.  Jordan Corry led the team defensively with 22 digs.

San Marcos led 24-22 in the second game, but Buena was able to push the set to extra points.  The Royals have been on the wrong end of close, pivotal sets many times this season, and feared they might see an all-too-familiar scenario play itself out.

“They fourght really, really, hard to win that second game,” Downing said.  “[It] really sent a statement, and in the third game, our whole thing was ‘no mercy.'”

The Royals played according to their new motto in the final set, and closed out Buena for the momentous victory.

“It’s been a long time coming and it’s really well deserved,” Downing said.  “We’re on cloud nine right now.”

San Marcos (1-6 overall, 1-3 league) continues Channel League play next Tuesday at home against Dos Pueblos.
