Rams on wrong end of 28-26 decision

Second-half mistakes cost Cate’s 8-man football team on Saturday as the Rams relinquished a halftime lead and fell to Rolling Hills Prep 28-26.

Rolling Hills took a 28-20 lead with 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Cate responded by scoring its first points of the second half on a pass from Kyle Mayfield to Austin Gallegos with 1:32 on the clock. But the ensuing two-point conversion failed and Rolling Hills was able to run out the clock.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the second half,” said Rams head coach Ben Soto, citing two lost fumbles and six penalties by his team in the final two quarters.

Rolling Hills quarterback Mark Wright was also a problem for the Rams. The senior rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another.

Cate’s Gallegos had a big day for the Rams, posting three touchdowns total. Gallegos and Mayfield connected for two scores and Gallegos ran another in.

Rolling Hills improves to 3-2 on the season while Cate falls to 2-2. Cate hosts Hope Center next week before beginning Condor League play against Thacher on October 22.
