Gauchos Young, Schumaker playing in the World Series

For the second straight season, two former UCSB baseball players will be playing against each other in the World Series.

Last year All-Star Michael Young (UCSB, 1995-97) led the Texas Rangers to the Fall Classic against the San Francisco Giants, who had Barry Zito (1997) on their side.

This season Young is again representing both UCSB and the Rangers while Skip Schumaker (2000-01) will be representing UCSB and the St. Louis Cardinals. Game 1 of the Series is Wednesday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Young, who set a career-high with 106 RBI this season for the Rangers, has batted just .209 but has seven RBI in the postseason.

Schumaker missed the NLCS with an oblique strain, but arguably has the biggest hit for the Cardinals in October with his run-scoring double vs. Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay in Game 5 of the National League Division Series. Schumaker’s status for the World Series is questionable.
