Doub medals, but Chargers take match to stay perfect in league

Every stroke counted as Dos Pueblos was able to edge out Santa Barbara 220-227 in a match worthy of the Channel League’s top two girls golf teams.

“It was a good high school sporting event,” Dos Pueblos head coach Rob Schiff said.  “It was really closely contested and everybody on both teams was fired up for today.”

Santa Barbara’s Isabella Doub was the medalist with a 36 at par-35 Glen Annie Golf Course.  Dos Pueblos’ Vanessa Villa was close the whole match, and finished with a 37.

With the teams’ top two nearly even, every shot from the other golfers was of great importance.

“Our second, third, and fourth scores were really good,” Schiff said.  “Our freshman Courtney Miller really stepped up with a 47.  That was her best score this year.”

The scores in the middle of the lineup for both squads proved to be the deciding factor in the narrow margin between the teams.

“We talk about playing for each other as a team, and not worrying about our individual scores, and I really thought we did a good job of that today,” Schiff said.

Santa Barbara (6-3 overall, 2-1 league) continue Channel League competition against Ventura at Montecito Country Club.

Dos Pueblos (8-2 overall, 4-0 league) will travel to play Buena on Thursday.
