Dons hand Peninsula its first loss of the season

Santa Barbara pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the girls tennis season, handing CIF Division 1 third-ranked Peninsula its first loss of the season, 10-8, on the Panthers’ courts.

The Dons, ranked No. 3 in Division 2, got stellar play from their doubles teams to earn the major victory. The team of Megan Grant and Madison Hale swept their three sets to give Santa Barbara a big lift. They handed Peninsula’s No. 1 team of Victoria Tam-Risa Nakagawa its first loss of the season, 6-3.

“We played solid tennis throughout the whole match,” said an excited Santa Barbara coach Steve Geremia.

The team of Taryn Mjelde and Marianna Alevra came through in the clutch by winning a pair of sets.

In singles, Summer Garrison went 2-1, losing only to Peninsula’s top player Annika Ringblom.

“This is the biggest win we’ve had in a long time,” said Geremia.

The Dons are 9-4 and Peninsula is 11-1.
