Dons, Chargers have tough time at California Challenge

It was a tough weekend for Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos at the California Challenge girls volleyball tournament at Torrey Pines High.

Santa Barbara finished third in the Bronze Bracket, beating Laguna Beach in one set, 25-17.

A short-handed Dos Pueblos squad placed fourth in the Competition Bracket, falling to Westview in the third-place match.

The Chargers played without starters Taylor Racich, Tristan Racich and Amanda Moriarty who were part of DP’s Homecoming court.

DP went 0-3 in Friday pool play and lost to Santa Barbara in a consolation round match, 25-21, 25-22. In Saturday’s Competition Bracket, the Chargers defeated Buchanan (25-13, 28-26) and lost to Chino Hills (25-19, 25-15).

Santa Barbara tied for second in pool play at 1-2. In tie-breaking playoffs for second place, the Dons beat Westview and lost to Vista Murrieta. They then beat DP to gain the Bronze Bracket on Saturday.

Santa Barbara beat Chaminade (25-21, 25-22) and lost to La Jolla Country Day (25-16, 26-28, 15-13).

Mater Dei defeated Corona del Mar for the Gold Division title.
