Wolf Wigo captured his 100th win at UCSB on Sunday as the Gauchos posted a pair of wins at the Inland Empire Classic in Redlands.
UCSB toppled host Redlands, 20-6, before grabbing Wigo’s 100th win and setting a school record for goals in a game with a 32-6 victory over Chapman.
With the pair of wins, UCSB improves to 5-1 on the season. Wigo now holds a 100-85 record as the Gaucho men’s water polo coach.
The Gauchos opened action at the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday night with a victory over Pomona Pitzer. UCSB jumped out to a 3-1 start in the first quarter behind goals from freshmen Eric Van de Mortel, Chase Racich and Liam Gaughan and never trailed on its way to the 12-7 victory.
Racich, Gaughan, Nick Tomasello and Matt Gronow each scored twice against Pomona-Pitzer, while goalkeepers Jay Lovero and Myles Christian each had five saves.
On Sunday, the Gauchos were led by Gronow’s four goals in their 20-6 defeat of Redlands. Derek Shoemaker, Scott Bishop, Van de Mortel, Racich and Tomasello all had two goals. Christian led the squad with three saves.
UCSB capped off the weekend with a huge offensive onslaught against Chapman. In Wigo’s 100th win, 15 different Gauchos scored as UCSB posted 32 goals, which breaks the previous school record of 30 goals in a game. That record was set in a 30-8 win over St. Mary’s in 1967.
Jesse Gillespie and Racich each had five goals in the record-setting victory while Gronow and Zhang each chipped in a hat trick. Christian had eight saves in goal.
