Warriors picked apart by Rocky Mountain

Rocky Mountain found holes in Westmont’s defense and scored two goals in each half to beat the Warriors 4-0 in the 12th annual Heritage Club Classic on Saturday at Thorrington Field.

Rocky Mountain controlled the tempo early and got off three shots within the first 20 minutes. The Westmont defense had difficulty clearing the ball, and Rocky Mountain’s Mikey Wall netted the rebound of Oliver Gore’s header for a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

Westmont countered aggressively, and gained some momentum. Midfielder Nana Akyen sliced his way through the defense and was fouled, resulting in a yellow card for Rocky Mountain and a free kick for Westmont in the 25th minute. Westmont failed to convert, and the Battlin’ Bears responded two minutes later.

Midfielder James Voisey passed from the right corner to Gore, who slotted the ball just inside the near post and past the outstretched arms of Westmont goalkeeper Andrew Singer for a 2-0 lead.

Rocky Mountain put the Warriors away early in the second half, as Voisey caught Singer out of position and proceeded to curl the ball from 40 yards out.  Singer tried to scramble back, but could only watch as the ball found the net.

Gore chipped in a ball from defender Evan Connoly over Singer to make the final score of the game 4-0.

The Warriors play again Monday at 4 p.m. against CSU San Marcos.

“We just have to dig deep and see if we can summon up some pride and put a performance in on Monday,” said Westmont coach Dave Wolf.
