Royals make strides in second match of season

San Marcos showed improvement in its second girls golf match, but the Royals played against a red-hot Oxnard team and lost 205-269 on Thursday at River Ridge Golf Course.

“Our team consists of all sophomores and freshman,” San Marcos coach Shawn Ricci said. “Our score is 26 strokes better than our Tuesday score. What a great way to head into the weekend. I’m very proud of their hard work and effort.”

Oxnard was led by Drew Thomas, who fired a 4-under par 31.

Melissa Jewkes shot 45 to lead San Marcos and Emily Peterson fired a 50.

“I am very impressed with both Melissa and Emily,” Ricci said. “They are playing consistent and solid golf for us every time we head out onto the course. Emily has been working on her putting and it is paying off every time she gets on the greens. Melissa continues to play with confidence from the tee to the green.”

He also gave praise to Brittany Peretiako and Kelsey Gellert.

“We have a great group of girls who are young and really beginning to grasp the nuances of golf,” Ricci said.
