The Dos Pueblos High boys water polo team won a game and lost a game at the South Coast Tournament, with Blake Parrish the leading goal scorer in both matches.
The team’s first game was against Riverside Poly, and the Chargers cruised to 14-9 victory in which they were able to rest their starters for the fourth quarter. Parrish had six goals while Nic Lum and Grant Schroeder each had three.
“That was our best offensive game of the season,” Chargers head coach Chris Parrish said. “It’s the first time we cracked 12 goals.”
Dos Pueblos’ next match was against Corona del Mar, the tournament’s fourth seed and the top ranked team in CIF-SS Division 2. The Chargers lost 9-7 in a neck-and-neck battle, where the team trailed by a single goal for most of the fourth quarter.
“Six of the nine goals were on ejections,” Parrish said. “I thought if we could eliminate some of the mistakes and keep ourselves from getting ejected, we’ll be OK.”
Blake Parrish led the team with four goals, while Sjors Van Alphen had two and Lum had one. Phillip Bates had an excellent match between the goalposts with 11 blocks.
“Some of them were just incredible,” Parrish said about his goalie’s saves.
Dos Pueblos will continue play in the tournament Friday in the 9th-16th bracket.
