Dons win overtime thriller to go 2-0 at Villa Park Tournament

The Santa Barbara High boys water polo team won both their games on the first day of the Villa Park Tournament in Orange County, including a match against Dana Hills that went into sudden-death overtime.

In the day’s first game against Crescenta Valley, the Dons offense started well, scoring nine goals in the first half on the way to a 15-7 victory.

“We scored a lot of goal in transition and got good play out of our centers Nick Johnson and Cristian Bridley,” head coach Mark Walsh said.

Skyler Matthews led the team with five goals, and Preston Schlagel had four more.

The second match against Dana Hills proved to be more competitive, and the game was tied at the end of each quarter.

The offense was well balanced with eight different Dons scoring a goal in the match.  Johnson, Connor McManigal, and Alec Linz each had two goals each.

No goal was more important that Linz’s second goal, which was scored in sudden-death overtime to give the Dons a victory.

The two wins put Santa Barbara through to the quarterfinals which will be played tomorrow.
