The Dos Pueblos High boys water polo team fought till the very end in its season opener in San Diego but fell short, 8-7, on a penalty shot in the fourth overtime against the Bishops School.
Later in the same day, the Chargers faced Cathedral Catholic, a perennial San Diego-area powerhouse. They led 5-3 at half time, but were unable to maintain the lead and lost 8-6.
In the early game, Sjors Van Alphen, the lone returner from last year’s squad, scored four of the seven Charger goals, but was ejected during the overtime periods. Freshman Blake Parrish added two goals in his first game for Dos Pueblos.
The other Charger goal came from sophomore Graham Young, who tied the game at six with just 17 seconds left in regulation.
In the later game, freshman Blake Parrish led the the team with three goals. Van Alphen, Grant Schroeder, and Nic Lum each added a goal, but Cathedral oaks was triumphant in the end.
“We started out on fire,” head coach Chris Parrish said. “They got a couple quick goals to tie the game and we just couldn’t recover.”
Parrish, Young, Schroeder, Lum, and goalie Phillip Bates played continuously throughout all 12 quarters of play during the day.
After the exhausting day, Dos Pueblos will have some time off and return home to play Mater Dei on Thursday at 5 p.m.
