Vaquero golfers look sharp in first round of the season

SBCC opened the women’s golf season in style on Sunday, shooting its best score in three years with a 312 that left the Vaqueros in third place after the first round of the South Coast Classic in Ventura.

Nicole Bullemer and Emily Wisma, a former Buena High standout, are tied for fifth after firing 5-over 76s at Buenaventura GC while Kurumi Ando and Haley True each carded 80 for SBCC.

Glendale leads the 36-hole tourney at 305, followed by Palomar (306), Santa Barbara (312) and Canyons (319). There are 10 teams in the tourney, including most of the top squads in Southern California.

Tammy Spiratchaya of Glendale was the medalist at 72.

“This is a real good start for us,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “It’s our best score in a while. We were pretty fired up.”

The final round will be played Monday morning at Olivas Park GC, along with WSC Meet No. 1.
