Royals respond well on tough Cypress Ridge course

With half of the team playing in its first high school golf match, San Marcos dropped its season opener to Arroyo Grande, 245-295, at Cypress Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday.

“This is the first tournament for over half of our team and they responded well to a challenging course,” said Royals coach Shawn Ricci. “Our scores in our practice rounds have been around 290, so a 295 at a new and difficult course is a solid start.”

Melissa Jewkes led San Marcos with score of 50 and Brittany Peretiako followed with a 58.

“Both girls felt they could play better and are eager to get back on the course,” he said. “Emily Peterson has shown a lot of improvement over the summer and shot a 61. I’m also impressed with freshman Kelsey Gellert who carded a 61 as well.”

San Marcos plays Oxnard at River Ridge on Thursday.
