Peterson beats world champ, advances to women’s final

Lakey Peterson continued her winning ways Sunday morning at the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing.

The 16-year-old Santa Barbara surfing sensation beat reigning world champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii to advance to the final of the Women’s Pro Division at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Peterson scored 14.67 on her best two waves to Moore’s 14.60 to follow up on her victory in the Junior Women’s final on Saturday.

Peterson said winning the junior title took the pressure off her on Sunday.

“I felt no pressure and just said, ‘Go for it,’ she said. “I’m so excited to win. It’s always great to surf against Carissa. I’ve always looked up to her.”

Peterson will surf against either Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia of Coco Ho of Hawaii in the final late Sunday.
