McCann begins pro baseball career with Tigers

Former Dos Pueblos High baseball star James McCann signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.

McCann, who played collegiately at the University of Arkansas, was taken in the second round (76th pick overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft in June. The catcher was the Tigers’ first pick of the draft.

In his junior season at Arkansas, McCann hit .306 with 14 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 38 RBIs in 61 games. He was a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the top collegiate catcher.

In his three years as a Razorback, McCann played in 169 games, including 152 starts, and had a .284 career batting average with 16 homers and 83 RBI.  Defensively, he compiled a .993 fielding percentage, committing just nine errors.

Although terms of the deal were not revealed, Baseball America’s Jim Callis reported McCann signed for approximately $558,000.
