Lakey to surf for Junior Women’s title at U.S. Open

Lakey Peterson comes out of the surf after winning her semifinal heat in the Junior Women's Division at the U.S. Open of Surfing

Lakey Peterson held off the challenge of two Hawaiians and advanced to the final of the Junior Women’s Division at the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach Pier on Friday.

The 16-year-old Santa Barbara surfing sensation will face Australia’s Laura Enever for the championship on Saturday’s morning.

Peterson scored a 12.27 out of possible 20 to win her semifinal heat over Coco Ho (11.27) and Leila Hurst (10.90) of Hawaii and Pauline Ado (6.94) of France.

In the second semifinal, Enever scored 15.50 to edge Hawaii’s Malia Manuel, who had a 14.84. Alessa Quizon (12.53) of Hawaii and Alexa Frantz (6.66) rounded out the heat.

Peterson faces a busy day on Saturday. She’ll battle Enever for the Junior Women’s title at 10 in the morning and then compete in the Women’s Pro quarterfinals at around 2:30 p.m.
