Fernandez beats impressive pack of runners in 5k

Dos Pueblos cross country standout Bryan Fernandez finished ahead of some big names in the local endurance sports community in Wednesday’s Nite Moves 5k run.

Fernandez, who is entering his junior season for the Chargers, ran a personal best 15:22 and defeated Eric Forte (16:14), Ricky Ho (16:21) and Todd Booth (16:42).

Andrea McLarty finished fifth and was the top woman with a time of 17:28.

Many of the top local runners entered Wednesday to accumulate points in the Santa Barbara Athletic Association Grand Prix.

In the 1k ocean swim at Leadbetter Beach, UCSB water polo coach and three-time U.S. Olympian Wolf Wigo showed he can still motor in the water, coming in first place in 12:58 and beating the members of his 2011 Gaucho team. Gaucho Brent McCunney finished second in 13:02 and 14-year-old Dos Pueblos freshman Walker Bell placed third.

Local Jim West was fourth (13:34) followed by UCSB team members and former DP water polo stars Derek Shoemaker and Chase Racich.

In the swim-run aquathon, Santa Barbara’s Jason Smith took top honors in 34:10 followed by McCunney (37:18) and Racich (38:09).

Former San Marcos standout athlete Marie Clair Lamb was the first female finisher in 44:48.
