Carly Wopat picked to U.S. team for World Junior Championships

Former Dos Pueblos High star Carly Wopat has been selected to the USA Volleyball Women’s Junior National Team that will compete at the FIVB Women’s World Junior Championships in Peru, beginning Friday.

Wopat is a 6-2 middle blocker who plays at Stanford and earned All-Freshman team honors in the Pac-10 last season.

She played on the junior national team last year that captured the gold medal at the NORCECA Women’s Junior Continental Championship in Tijuana, Mexico.

The junior national team trained for the world championships at St. Mary’s College from July 10-19. The team is coached by St. Mary’s women’s volleyball coach Rob Browning.

“While the competition will be fierce in Peru this summer, we have a group of players and coaches who can win it all,” Browning told USA Volleyball. “We want to return with the World Championship trophy.”

To be eligible for the 2011 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team, athletes needed to be born in either 1992 or 1993.
