Attack of the Killer Tri, Part VI

Veronica McHugh

This Sunday is the big day!

I am excited, nervous, and anxious about my upcoming race. The last two and a half months of training have flown by, and now it’s time to see how well I do in my first Sprint Triathlon.

This week’s workouts have been easier than all of the other weeks. Kyle and Bob have those of us who are racing on Sunday doing a little less than everyone else. Our pre-race training schedule this week was:

Monday – Cycling class at Killer B Fitness
Tuesday – warm-up, 30 to 45 minute run
Wednesday – Master’s Swim
Thursday – warm-up, 2 7-minute running intervals at race pace, cool-down
Friday – Master’s Swim
Saturday – Off
Sunday – RACE DAY!

All in all, I feel pretty good this week. I don’t have a time goal set for the race; my main goal has always been just to finish the race and have fun with it.

My wave for the Strawberry Fields Sprint Tri starts at 7:05 am on Sunday. We will have to get there early for parking, registration check-in, and to check out the course and get settled. My husband Mike is doing the Sprint Tri with me, my friend Shannon is doing the Duathlon, and Kyle is doing the Olympic Triathlon.

The Strawberry Fields Sprint Triathlon is a ¼ mile ocean swim, followed by an 11.5 mile bike ride, finished off with a 5k run. The Duathlon starts with a 2 mile run, followed by an 11.5 mile bike ride, and ends with a 5k run. Since Kyle is the expert, he is racing the Olympic course, something he has done many times before. The Olympic begins with a ½ mile ocean swim, followed by a 23.1 mile bike ride, and ends with a 10k run.

I plan on going in to the race with a positive attitude and a mindset. I would like to have fun while trying my best. Since this is my first race, I want to have a good experience so that I register for another race in the future.

The training program offered by Killer Tri has been an amazing experience. I will continue with the program after I complete my first triathlon for the simple fact that Kyle and Bob are amazing at what they do. The training is focused and individualized, while maintaining a team feel. The results are tangible; each time we test improvements can be seen in everyone in the group.

I will let you know how the race goes. Wish me luck!
