Platinum riders are king of the mountain for 7th straight time

With its streak of state titles on the line, the riders of the Platinum Performance cycling team rose to the occasion and held off the Bear Valley Bikes team to claim its seventh straight championship.

Buoyed by wins from Chester Gillmore and Ian Barense, Platinum Performance won by 20 points. Gillmore took the Category 2 age 25-29 race and Barense the Cat. 2, 45-49 division.

Todd Booth (Cat. 1 40-44), John Miller (Cat. 1 55-59) and Greg Turner (Cat. 2 45-49) pulled off runner-up finishes, while Mark Luke (Cat. 2 50-54) and John Biron (Cat. 1 50-54) placed third on the 24-mile course in Big Bear.

Bob Nisbet added to the point total with a second-place finish in the 50-mile race.

The best eight results in each category division are counted in the overall team point total.

Besides the team title, Booth, Luke and Turner won individual state series championships. There were seven races in the series.
