Thompson resigns after one season at SBCC

Ryan Thompson has resigned as baseball coach at Santa Barbara City College after just one season.

Thompson guided the Vaqueros to the Western State Conference North Division championship, their first postseason series win and their first Southern California Super Regional appearance. He was named the WSC North Coach of the Year.

His team went 24-17 and 15-5 in the conference.

“I had a blast with the student-athletes and was very proud of their accomplishments,” Thompson said in an email to Presidiosports.

Ryan Thompson steps down after one season at SBCC.

Thompson was hired last summer to replace Teddy Warrecker, who left after 10 seasons to accept an assistant coaching position at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

“We thank coach Thompson for his service to SBCC and wish him well,” said SBCC interim athletic director Ellen O’Connor in a statement. “The search to fill the head baseball coach position will begin immediately. The position will remain open until filled.”

Thompson’s hiring was a homecoming for him. He graduated Dos Pueblos High and played baseball for the legendary Scott O’Leary. He was an all-county player in football and baseball.

Thompson came to SBCC from San Diego-Scripps Ranch High, where he coached baseball and was a teacher. Before that he was an assistant baseball coach at Cuesta College.

Comments

  1. Get another Warrecker in there.

    • why? Thompson comes in & does what Teddy couldn’t do…speaks volumes.

      • Old coach says

Hey Dummy, Thompson did it with Teddy’s recruits!.Great hire by the O’connor gals. Next time talk to people who played for and coached against Thompson. At least the bull ben was watered on a regular basis by Thompson in an organic way, just saying

  2. realitychex says

local…they won league and went to the playoffs under Teddy’s watch too.  Oh, and like the other poster aptly pointed out…who do you think recruited all those player?  Give me a break…you obviously know NOTHING about college baseball…or Ryan Thompson.

  3. Nobrainer says

This is a no brainer decision – hire Wes Warracker as new coach.   It will allow the program to stay on the rails that his brother Teddy put in place.  Plus he will get any non D1 player from SBHS since his dad also coaches the local high school team.

  4. DiamondDave says

If you want to form an educated opinion on the current state of SBCC baseball then look at the facility from last year to this year, talk to the parents of players who played for both Teddy and Ryan, talk to the players themselves.  You would be appalled at the differences and you would know exactly why Thompson is no longer there.  If anyone thinks he coached that team to the finals, you are crazy.  That team had a solid foundation to begin with.  I second the nomination of Wes Warrecker.  Stand up guy and could definitely add class, professionalism and leadership that those student athletes need and deserve.

  5. SB Baseball Fan says

I third the consideration of Wes Warrecker – he comes from a great baseball pedigree.  That way when Teddy takes over the Gaucho program – there will be a Warrecker baseball trifecta in town.  Donny the youngest of the Warrecker clan could also take over Westmont’s struggling program.

    UCSB – Teddy Warrecker
    SBSC – Wes Warrecker
    Westmont – Donny Warrecker
Santa Barbara HS – Fred Warrecker

Maybe even Pintard would considering running Tony’s tree service company over the summer.  Now you have:

    SB Forresters – Tony Warrecker

I think there are a couple other Warrecker brothers who could also step up to the plate:

San Marcos HS – Donny Warrecker (first order of business – kick the girl off the team)

Dos Pueblos HS – Willie Warrecker

    • baseballgeek465 says

why would u kick the girl off the team? shes their best pitcher.. oh and by the way knucklehead, she’s on the national team and playing semipro this summer, and she’s going to pitch in college, so why don’t you get your facts straight.knucklehead

      • Bulldog03 says

Having a girl be able to participate on a high school boys baseball team is indicative of a very poorly run program.  This should NEVER happen.  I applaud this girl for making the team while at the same time am embarrassed for the SM boys baseball program for not being able to develop enough talent to field an all boys team for a boys sport (especially in a D2 division – were not talking about a small school that could barely even field a team).   After watching the Dons team play I can honestly say that a girl no matter how good she is would ever make their team.  Not because Warrecker would prevent it from happening, rather he would probably hang up his spikes if it did happen, realizing he is no longer able to develop baseball talent appropriately.

        • she hit .400 this year, shes gonna play semipro with the guys, and shes going to play college baseball next year at the University of Maine, on the guys team. shes obviously not a publicity stunt. how many guys on the dons are going to play college ball next year? im pretty sure just the same amount san marcos has

          • sb baseball fan says

the last time I counted, there were 3 Dons players going on to play in D1 college programs this year…possibly more.

          • oh ok? we had just heard of collin and danny..how many play for their country though?

    • Boomer Sooner says

Wow, you must get paid bank by the Warrecker’s just like Mike Cano is to umpire them…..oh and by the way I saw Oz (don’t know how to spell her name) pitch against the dons at san marcos, they couldn’t touch her.

      • Sbnative says

Baseball geek you are way out of line with your comments. Mike Cano is an outstanding official and citizen of Santa Barbara. You should be happy he gives his time and dedication to the community and the high school sports. If you think you umpiring is easy try it sometimes. And if you knew anything you would know he graduated from Bishop Diego and continues to support them!

    • Boomer Sooner says

wow, you must get paid by the warreckers for pr, and by the way I saw oz  pitch against the dons at san marcos, they couldn’t touch her curveball

    • royalsfootball says

wow you must get paid by the warrecker’s to post stuff on presidio, and lay off Ghaz!

  6. Bulldog03 says

I remember when Wes helped coach the Dons – he was great with us.  If he was at SBCC when I went to college I would have played for him instead of going to Hancock.  Would be good to see him running a college program.  One thing is for sure all of the players would be playing the game the right way.

  7. I went to many games this year and the success of the SBCC baseball team this year was a tremendous testimony to Coach Thompson’s ability to get a ton out of nothing. The team couldn’t hit, was suspect defensively, was slow, and pitched courageously. Not exactly a formula for the most successful season in school history but he made it happen. Teddy Warrecker underachieved year after year, was a sub .500 career coach, and won only one conference title in 10 years and went 0-4 in the playoffs with loaded teams. So enough of the recruiting issues mentioned.

As for Wes being the next in line – not qualified. Good guy, great lineage, no qualifications. There are better candidates amongst the other assistants alone. Just sayin’.

    • Old coach says

You are really out if it! SBCC had the talent, Chris Joyce MV Pitcher, Kyle Turnbill, rated amomg Basreball America top 100 Pitchers. To say coach Thompson got a ton out of nothing shows your ignorance of college baseball. Robert Vickers could play for any D-1 in the country but chose to play for Teddy Warrecker at SBCC . Teddy Warrecker put in 10 tough years to bring a program from the bottom to one that could compete with any JC program in the state. By the way, Teddy did it all for minimum wage, Dude, you ignorant ass!

  8. Sounds like the Dude might BE one of the other assistants. Hmmmm

  9. Rjackson says

I love how this has become an attack on SBHS and the Warrecker family. I doubt they even log on to read this drivel but after knowing them for many years I doubt any of you would say I to their faces. They’re a great SB family and an asset to our local baseball community. As are guys like Mike Cano, Bill Pintard and many others. Now back to Ryan Thompson…oh boy…

  10.  I am on the san marcos baseball team, im the equipment manager, Ghaz is
our best pitcher. Stop hating on her just because she is a girl, just
because her success landed her on sports center and the front cover of
the la times, getting a bronze medal at the world championships playing
for team usa, a semipro offer and a college baseball scholarship doesn’t
mean you have to get all but thurt about it. nobody works harder,
nobody’s a nicer person, nobody cares about the game more than she does.
    lay off her

  11. baseballboy66 says

for anyone saying girls cant play baseball, or thinks Ghaz should get kicked off the team, you’re crazy. If your so tough, any of you, why don’t you go say it to her face. you’ll know where to find her, she’ll be at san marcos, training to go play semipro, Im sure she’d love to talk to you after she takes her 400 daily ground balls and batting practice till her hands bleed. gosh your ridiculous. I bet none of you knuckleheads even know her.

  12. Don Parent says

This is the most embarrassing group of comments I have ever seen. All these great baseball minds in one place!! The comments about the various high school programs has nothing to do with this article. Why would anyone be talking about a girl playing baseball, or the greatness of the Warrecker family when the article was about the SBCC Coach? The truth is..coaching is overrated, and with open enrollment the three schools are not playing on the same level playing field. Kids pick schools based on the past success of the programs they want to play in. SMHS made the playoffs the two previous years and..their freshman squad beat SBHS in all 3 meeting this year. Don’t boast too much, the tide may be turning sooner then later. Bottom line, please have some class and keep it all in perspective, these are kids we are talking about. Go Dons ! 1 more game til Dodger Stadium!!

    • Diablo Fan 11-7 says

Coaching is overrated?  Now that is an embarrassing comment.   I guess that is why we beat the Dons.  Go Diablos!

      • don parent says

The kids from Mission Viejo played a great game!  Good luck tonight at Dodger Stadium. Fans and parents should be proud of the team. I was at the game and I did not see any coaches make any great catches or hit the ball….but we should all thank them for the time they spend with the kids. Their hard work and dedication is truly under appreciated.

  13. Rosie O'Donnell says

I agree with Don Parent – girls should not be allowed to play on a boys baseball team.   I am sure Ryan Moore liked catching a girls pitch.   Let’s see – have a chance to play at Dodger Stadium or finish last in Channel League and play catch with a girl.  If Ghaz is so good and on the women’s national team (did not even know we had one), then why did she not go to SBHS to play with better players and further improve her skills?   Easy answer – she would have not made the team.

I would sure hate to be the last player cut on the SM baseball team this year.  Dad why didn’t you play baseball in HS?  Well son I tried but a girl beat me out and I was not allowed to play on the girls softball team.

    • Ghaz Sailors says

this is Ghaz Sailors. I am sick and tired of getting text message after text message that people are fighting over me on this. This is ridiculous and out of control, I play baseball at san marcos high school because of the way I was treated at Dos Pueblos, the people at san marcos have taken me under their wing and helped me become the athlete I am today. My older brother went there, and I have all the respect in the world for Coach Warrecker and his family, the Santa Barbara Dons program has shown all the respect to me when we played against each other, I grew up with those kids, but a coach known for his old school way of baseball, well girls aren’t included in that, and “Don Parent” is probably right, he would hang up his spikes before letting a girl on his team NO MATTER HOW GOOD SHE IS. There is nothing wrong with that, what I do is rare, and that’s why I get the reactions I do. Jackie Robinson got the same thing when he tried to become the first black player to play in the major leagues, Jackie Mitchell the same thing when she struck out babe ruth, and Im sure Danica Patrick gets the same thing when she tries to race cars, not to mention the University of Colorado- Boulder football player who was raped because she was a woman, to her coach responding “Well she couldnt make a field goal to save her life.”

You can say what you want, I can’t control your compassion, your intellegence, but don’t you dare question the integrity of the people at San Marcos, people like Coach Vanetti, Coach Crawford, Coach Miller, Coach Jahadamy,Coach Solis  or any athletic personnel that wears the red and blue.I would take a bullet for any of them and just like they have my back, I have their back. They took me under their wing and made me into the athlete and more importantly the person I am today, and if you really had a problem, why don’t you come up to me and say it to my face. and until the day you do, because I really have no idea who any of you are, and until you have the guts to come talk to me, you can keep your sexist, crude, and ignorant comments to yourself. God Bless.
      -Ghaz Sailors

    • Don Parent says

Ghaz, good for you! 98% of the Santa Barbara population, applauds your efforts and wishes you nothing but success in your future endeavors. If you read what I wrote earlier, you will see that I am not the one who said that girls should not play baseball. I am proud of you, and proud of any student athlete that gives 100% regardless of the outcome. Thank you to all the coaches who basically volunteer their time to coach and give back to the kids in this community. Your efforts are appreciated!

      • Ghaz Sailors says

Don Parent, I am sorry, I meant to aim that comment at Bulldog 03. Thank you for your support. You have no idea how touched I am. My apologies to you for the misunderstanding. I wish you and all the dons lots of success in the year to come.

      • Old coach says

To Don Parent: On one hand you say coaching is overrated and the next post you thank all of them for what they do? Have another cocktail and call me in the morning.

        • donparent says

As a college coach for many years, I can easily say that, coaches are always in a no win situation.. We cant catch the ball for the players nor hit….We get blamed for the losses and the kids get credit when we win.  Coaches are there to facilitate and let the kids shine, but as an “old coach” sounds like you would hope to take all the credit for your teams success?

  14. Kmvanetti says

Are you serious? What century are you in buddy? If it weren’t for women like Oz, there would be no women’s sports. Thank you Oz for being brave and having such a big heart. And she can flat out play! She throws strikes and gets guys out! Plus, Oz is a team player. Oh yeah, and what “player didn’t get developed at San Marcos”? Come on! And let’s not forget, these are just high school kids. Let’s put things in perspective people. Are theses kids really in high school for the sports? Funny, because I thought it was for the education.

  15. Ghaz Sailors says

If you had any class at all or any respect for yourself, you would stop ripping on “Don Parent.” He’s just a good-hearted classy guy that wants to make sure people keep things in perspective, that’s the most important life lesson there is (perspective.) If there were more people like him out there, this world would be a better place, and by the way I’m sure he was a damn good college baseball coach.
Before you talk, think about respect, for yourself, your school, the community, and most importantly for the game of baseball. All of you ripping on him should be ashamed of yourselves. Show some integrity and respect!

  16. settle down says

alright, this has gotten out of hand. real quick: have respect for teddy (and the warreckers) but at the same time, dont bash thompson because none of you know him.  wes has had 1 year of assistant coaching experience at the jc level and helped his dad with summer ball for a few years which does not qualify him to be a head coach YET. to say that thompson used teddy’s recruits is fair except when you realize that thompson brought in joyce who went on to be the pitcher of the year. Turnbull posted a lofty era the previous year and topped out at 84 mph, different story this year. I refuse to bash teddy, but you need to realize that sbcc had never won a playoff game until last year and you cant scream and yell all you want but that speaks to thompson on some level.  The lunacy of some of these posts is unbearable: bringing the entire warrecker dynasty to coach all sb teams is just outrageous.  Aside form the fact that most of them live out of town and have had no contact with the sport for years, not one of them (outside of teddy) has ever been a full time coach.  again, nothing against the warreckers, they are great people, just be realistic people.  Finally, sb baseball fan, bulldog and the rest of you worms should be ashamed of yourselves for your ignorant comments on the san marcos girl.  I mean, really?  crawl under the rocks you came from and keep your bigotry to yourselves.
