Cate ran into hot weather and a hot Santa Ynez tennis team and suffered a 12-6 loss in matchup of CIF Division 4 top-10 teams.
Cate (7-7) is ranked seventh and Santa Ynez fourth in the division.
Cate coach Bob Bonning said it was a playoff-like atmosphere at Santa Ynez.
“It was 95 degrees on the court and there were about 40 fans there,” he said.
Blake Mackall went 2-1 in singles and the doubles team of Gregory Mak and Ahmed Bou-Rabee went 3-0.
Miles Seemann paced the Pirates by going 3-0 in singles.
The Rams and Pirates await the CIF draw on Monday.
