The last time Andrew Perez came to town for a golf tournament he was on a hot streak, winning city tltles in Goleta, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
That was in August, when he teammed with Brandon Gama to win the Santa Barbara Classic.
Perez is on another hot streak as he returns to the Santa Barbara Golf Club this weekend to defend his title in the 52nd annual Santa Barbara City Championship.
The traditional
54-hole Memorial Day-weekend event tees off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and concludes on Monday.
Perez is one of three returning champions in the Championship Flight. The others are Gama (2009) and two-time winner Kevin Marsh (2004, 2005).
Perez is coming off a stellar season at College of the Desert. He took medalist honors at the Southern California Regionals and at the State Community College Championships, leading Desert to a regional title and a state runner-up finish — the team lost by two strokes to Chabot College. He was the only player to finish under par at the state finals (6-under 138) at Kings Country Club in Hanford.
Perez played at Santa Barbara High and was the CIF-Southern Section champion in 2008. He also played at SBCC for one season.
He became the first player since 2006 to claim the Santa Barbara “double” last year, winning the City Championship and the Santa Barbara Classic.
The championship flight will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, 1:30 p.m. on Sunday 1:30 p.m. and between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
The tournament also includes titles in A through F flights. Those players tee off at 1:30 on the first day and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
