Martin wins heat in 800, qualifies for NCAA Finals

EUGENE, Ore.– Ryan Martin is headed to the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters after qualifying in the quarterfinals on day two of the preliminaries at Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Martin placed first in heat three with a time of 1:48.70 and will be the only Gaucho so far who has qualified for the national meet in Des Moines, Iowa. Last year Martin finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championships and earned All-American status.

Two Gauchos competed in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase. Andrea Jacobs ran 10:24.65 for a new personal record but will not move on to the finals as she finished 21st. Ari Selix ran 11:00.97 in the steeple and placed 45th overall.

Justine Diaz finished seventh in her heat with a personal best time of 2:08.52 but was unable to advance to the finals. Last year, Diaz’s fastest time of the season was at the NCAA West Preliminaries where she ran 2:08.75 and finished 25th overall.

Two Gauchos have their opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Sunday, Jean Lightfoot in the discus and Amanda Moreno in the 5,000 meters.
