Chargers, Dons, Royals look to qualify for CIF Divisional Finals

Santa Barbara’s Briggs Deardorff and Sergey Sushchikh and Nick Scarvelis of Dos Pueblos have the top qualifying marks in their respective events at the CIF Division 2 Track and Field Prelims on Saturday at Moorpark High.

In the Division 3 meet, San Marcos’s 4×400 girl relay team and 300 hurdler Elysia Hodges both rank second and 800 runner Marie Brashears is third on the entry performance list for the prelims at Estancia High.

San Marcos has eight athletes in individual events and four relay teams looking to advance to next week’s divisional championships.

Dos Pueblos has a total of 19 athletes in 21 events and two relay quartets hoping to keep their postseason alive.

Scarvelis is the leading Division 2 qualifier in the shot put with a mark of 61-6. He has been the state leader all season. His best mark so far is 64-5.5, set at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Sushchikh has the fastest 3200 time (9:20.81) of all the prelims entrants.

Deardorff enters the prelims with the best qualifying time in the 1600 at 4:15. 28.

At the Division 3 prelims, the San Marcos girls 4×400 team of Elysia Hodges, Kaylin Koopmans, Marie Brashears and Hannah McDaniel will see their toughest competition for a CIF divisonal title — Harvard Westlake. The Royals ran 3:54.04 to qualify for the prelims and are second on the entry list behind Harvard Westlake’s 3:51.71.

Hodges (44.50) is second to San Marino’s Omhunigue Brown (43.90) in the girls 300 hurdles.

Nine athletes (each heat winner and the next best time) in each running event advance to the CIF Divisonal Finals at Cerritos. In field events, it’s the top nine individuals that qualify for the finals.

Brashears, who ran personal best 2:17.53 to win the Channel League finals, trails Monrovia’s Amanda Mansoorbekht (2:16.01) and Chelsea Kruthers of San Juan Hill (2:17.0) going into Saturday’s meet. Right behind them is Tri-Valley League champion Sydney Lewis of Oak Park (45.90).

The Royals’ girl 4×100 relay (Hodges, Koopmans, Courtney LaViale and McDaniel) rank fifth at 48.88. Inglewood tops the list at 48.58.

The San Marcos boys 4×400 relay team (Tristan Lake, Dillon Kraus, Randee Harvey, Philip David) is second behind Chaminade with a qualifying time of 3:23.73. Chaminade’s time is 3:22.94.

Shane Rowan ranks second in the triple jump with a mark of 45-2. Sean Nang of South Pasadena had the leading mark of 45-4.5

Lake is sixth in the list in the 300 hurdles at 39.75. The leader is Nick Reynolds of Apple Valley at 38.34 followed by Agoura’s Jonathan Cabral (38.62).

Also competing for San Marcos are Andrew Thayer and Harvey in the 100 and 200, Kira Plymire and Christina Khalil in the 100 hurdles, McDaniel in the high jump and Hodges in the 200.

Scarvelis ranks sixth in the discus at the D-2 prelims with a qualifying mark of 166-02. He has throw over 180 this season.

Other DP entries with top-10 qualifying marks include the girls 4×100 relay (Melissa Motyer, Erin Ristig, Marina Plesons, Jessica Escalante), fifth at 48.95; girls 4×400 relay (Emma Redick, Plesons, Ristig, Escalante), fifth at 4:00.15; Escalante in the 100 (9th at 12.51); freshman Stamatia Scarvelis, shot put (9th at 37-9); Plesons, pole vault (10th at 10-6) and Ellen Sandin, long jump (10th at 16-11).

The other DP girls qualifiers and their events are: Escalante (200), Erin Campbell (1600, 3200), Plesons (long jump), Addie Zerrenner (1600), Andi DeRogotis (300 hurdles), Ayla Nelson (high jump), Sandin (triple jump), MacKenzie Spencer (discus).

DP’s boys qualifiers are: Jacob Bartholomew (800, 4×400), Graham Ashby: (800, 4×400), Joe Strong (pole vault), Kurtis Switzer (pole vault), German Hernandez (300 hurdles), Waiman Meinhold (long jump, triple jump), Jim Lagattuta (shot put, discus), Andy Lopez (4×400), John Linehan (4×400).

Also competing for Santa Barbara is Robert Palmer in the 110 high hurdles.
