Cate lacrosse falls short in CIF-SS Division 2 title game

Cate finished the season as the CIF-SS Division 2 runner-up for the Northern Division girls lacrosse on Saturday after losing 17-14 to St. Margaret at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach.

Alexis Hill finished off her stellar season with a bang, scoring 8 goals, dishing 2 assists and capturing 3 draw contols in the loss.

Hill scored a total of 101 goals in the season.

Cate played catch-up from the start, after being down 4-0 through the first seven minutes. The Rams gathered themselves after a time out and scored three goals in the next two minutes, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Tartans continued to fight and raised the lead to 10-6 at half.

After a St. Margaret run to start the second half, Cate took advantage of another timely time out and made a run of its own, cutting the lead to within 2 with four minutes remaining in the game.

With the Tartans controlling possession for most of the final minutes, the Rams were unable to make a comeback run in their final stand.

“It was a great game, and our team should be especially proud. We finished off a terrific playoff run with an exciting game,” said coach Linda Sommers. “Special thanks to our seniors for a tremendous season: Brennan Cusack, Grace Gail, Kate Groetzinger, Abby Killea, Angela Lee and Alexx Temena.”

Annie Weis finished with 3 goals, 3 assists, and one draw control. Cusack pitched in with 1 goal, 1 assist, and 3 draw contols.
