Cardinals rally to beat Fillmore, secure second place

Bishop Diego baseball finished the regular season in second place in the Frontier League after rallying in the final two innings to beat Fillmore on Thursday, 7-2 at Fillmore.

After a scoreless game through five innings, the Cardinals broke away with a one-run double from Dakotah Sutton, followed by an RBI single by John Salda to bring the score to 2-0.

Fillmore responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own to tie the score.

Bishop Diego exploded in the seventh, beginning with a Jack Gregson sacrifice fly to score Sam Kwock. Reese Moulton stepped up to hit an RBI double and Sutton finished off the inning with a two-run double to increase the lead to 7-2.

“I felt we played pretty well today. We didn’t get our offense started until late in the game. Our pitching definitely kept us in the game,” said coach Dan Yokubaitis.

Hank Vanderfin pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, striking out four and allowing two unearned runs with four hits. Vanderfin finished off the season at 4-1.

Moulton finished the game 2-4 with two doubles. Sutton also finished with two doubles, and was 3-4 at the plate.

Vanderfin was 2-4 with a double.

The Cardinals finished the season with an overall record of 12-7, and 8-4 in the Frontier League.
