Big comeback gives San Marcos sweep over Bishop

Hannah Ball went 4-for-4 and drove in six runs to lead San Marcors to an 11-1 win over Bishop Diego in the first game of a non-league softball doubleheader on Saturday.

The Royals completed the sweep, rallying for five runs in the seventh inning to win the nightcap 6-4.

Bishop led 3-0 after four innings. Diana Sleep singled home the first run in the first inning; Talia VanWingerden scored on an error in the third and Annette Gonzalez tallied the third run in the fourth after reaching base with a single and scoring on an error on a long fly ball to center.

Bishop center fielder Dani Devries made two game-saving catches at the fence on balls hit by Hannah Ball and Kristen Berlo in the fifth and sixth innings. She fell over the fence while legally making the catch on Ball’s hit.

San Marcos finally got on the board in the sixth with a leadoff single by Hannah Johnson, who was driven home on an RBI single by Stephanie Swann.

Bishop added a run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 4-1.

But the Royals erupted in the seventh. Ball led off with a hard double down the left field line and scored on a single by Amy Medina.  After a fly out, Medina scored on a single by Johnson. With two outs, Emily Dietz hit a high chopper toward first base. The Bishop firstt baseman fielded the ball and went for the tag, but the ball popped out of her glove and Dietz was safe. Jocelyn Flattery doubled home Johnson with the game tying run. Swann then tripled to drive in Flattery and Dietz to give San Marcos a two-run lead.

Bishop threatened with a walk and a single but could not score as Kristen Berlo struck out two of the remaining three batters.

Johnson was 3 for 4 in the game with three runs scored and Swann was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.  Berlo struck out 12 in the game.

In the opener, the Royals pounded out 15 hits. They led 5-0 after two innings.

Berlo struck out eight while throwing just 58 pitches, and she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored.
